Vancouver Birth Center Project

There are birth centers all over the world and a few in Canada but none in B.C. We are in the beginning planning stages of setting up a birth center here in Vancouver.  For more information about birth centers please visit www.birthcenters.org

Mission: To provide excellence in women and family centered maternity care by offering both a specially designed environment and a holistic approach to health which together promote wellness and support normal birth.

Philosophy: Our fundamental philosophy is that pregnancy and birth are normal, healthy events in the life of a woman.  They are an opportunity for personal growth and the strengthening of relationships.  They are a unique process that belongs to a pregnant woman and her family however she defines that.

We are dedicated to spending the time to educate, advise, and support the childbearing family.  We do so in order to foster a woman’s confidence in her body, in her ability to achieve health, and in her ability to make the most suitable and successful decisions for herself and her baby.

While we value achieving the best possible outcomes for women and their babies we also equally value the process and the journey by which these outcomes are achieved.

We believe that all women, no matter their ethnicity, their sexual orientation, their age, their ability, their income or their family structure, deserve respectful and health promoting maternity care and we strive to provide that.
What is a birth center?

The birth center is a homelike facility existing within a healthcare system with a program of care designed in the wellness model of pregnancy and birth.

Birth centers are guided by principles of prevention, sensitivity, safety, appropriate medical intervention, and cost effectiveness.

Birth centers provide family-centered care for healthy women before, during and after normal pregnancy, labor and birth.

A birth center is:

People: Parents and professionals creating family-centered care.

Place: Caring, warm and homelike setting where you are supported and respected as well  as safe and secure.

Program of Care: Balancing the human touch and technology to give you the time and
attention you need before, during and after the birth.

Part of the Health Care System: Complete network of maternity and women's health services integrated within the health care system.

Practice of Midwifery: A setting that supports the midwifery model of care including a wellness and holistic approach to pregnancy, birth, and women's health care.
