Uniquely Intimate Film Screening of
DOULA! The Ultimate Birth Companion
Douglas College (New Westminster), Thursday July 15 @ 7pm
A new documentary film about doulas - professional birth companions - is being screenedas part of a worldwide campaign to help raise awareness.
Doula! The Ultimate Birth Companion is a 65 minute, intimate and emotionally charged documentary about doulas and their part in pregnancy, birth and the first few weeks. Made by UK film-maker Toni Harman (Credo, Real Birth Stories), Doula! launches in June 2010 and screenings are being organised in the UK, Europe, the US, Canada, Australia and Japan.
Through close-up documentary footage of three doula-supported births, Doula! captures the non-medical but highly practical and emotional support given to the mother before, during and after childbirth. This unique look into a doula supported birth is captured through two intimately filmed home water births and accompanied by a video diary shot by the parents of a home birth that ends in a hospital caesarean section.
Film-maker Toni Harman said "I was inspired to make Doula! by my own difficult birth experience two years ago that ended in an emergency caesarean. I wish I had known about doulas then as I'm sure I would have had a much more positive experience. The film has really opened my eyes about the amazing difference having a doula can make and I'm hoping the film will empower other women to have the birth they want, with the help of a doula."
Doula! is supported by the UK's non-profit doula organisation, Doula UK. Bridget Baker, Doula UK co-chair said, "Doula! shows how the calm accepting presence of a doula can enhance the whole experience of childbirth. From the practical to the emotional, we become aware of some of the work an intuitive doula can do. The film is a joyful and inspirational view of doulas at work."
The production team behind Doula! created film screening kits in an attempt to encourage public screenings, which the film is licensed for.
The free Doula! film is being shown at 7pm on July 15 2010 at Douglas College (Room 2201). The screening is being organised by the Doula Services Association of BC

Cloth Diaper 101 WorkshopsInspiring Families. Empowering Families.
Changing the World ONE Diaper at a Time.
New & Green has worked with many parents that are new to cloth diapers. We work with each family to help them successfully reach their goals to be environmental stewards, to be prudent managers of their baby budget and to be mindful of their baby's health - all by choosing to cloth diaper their child.
New & Green has taken the most commonly asked questions about cloth diapering and developed a workshop that is perfect for parents who want to cloth diaper and want to learn how to make it work!
Lots of research can be done via online sources and from family and friends. What isn't easy to find is the practical, hands on "how to's" and this is what we focus on at our workshops.
At New & Green's Cloth Diaper 101 workshop, you will:
- Learn how to use cloth diapers - how to put them on, how to store them and how to wash them (and how easy all of this is!)
- Review the most popular reusable diapering options available to you today and look at why families choose each option
- Learn what you need to get started with cloth diapering, including a checklist for a kit that can get any family started from day one - and succeed!
- Have the opportunity to get your hands on several types and brands of diapering systems - see how they work & see how they feel
- Have your questions about cloth diapering answered by an expert
The next workshop is August 9th: 7:30-9:00pm
