Midwifery

Emily Baxter, Registered Midwife

In 2005 I traveled Kitgum, Uganda and spent six months volunteering in various roles. I had the privilege of witnessing birth during my time there - sparking my passion for working in this field.

When I returned to Canada, I provided birth and postpartum doula support to growing families for almost ten years to over one hundred families. I took workshops to develop my skills and knowledge in supporting families emotionally through loss and providing support to parents with a history of trauma. I gained valuable experience in my role as a doula, and have applied that to my learning throughout my Bachelor of Midwifery.

In my second year of midwifery I worked with a busy Vancouver clinic attending births at home and BC Women’s hospital. In my third year the majority of my year was spent at Surrey Memorial Hospital working with an alternate midwifery practice. I stayed at Surrey Memorial for my inter-professional placement with Maternal Fetal Medicine, and moved to Royal Columbian and BC Women’s for my OBGYN, Medical Genetics, and Perinatal Addictions placements.

I feel honoured to provide midwifery care to families, and have a passion for connecting with clients and catering my support to meet their individual needs.

Outside of my work as a midwife, I am a mother of three. My children and I enjoy spending time hiking, at the beach, camping, baking, making slime and having dance parties together!

We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we provide care is the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
